Yesterday at Deauville in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest-Goldikova at 1300 meters, trainer Freddie Head unveiled his latest star, the three-year-old filly Moonlight Cloud. She’s owned and was bred by American George Strawbridge Jr. and may well join Goldikova in the BC Mile. Mr. Strawbridge has raced three Breeders’ Cup winners—Informed Decision, Forever Together, and Tikkanen—and has been a major supporter of racing’s championship day with many starters over the years. Several of his European runners throughout the years have been transferred to his principal US trainer Jonathan Sheppard on the East Coast or to Neil Drysdale on the West Coast to be campaigned under his Augustin Stables banner, some after racing in the Breeders’ Cup.
Moonlight Cloud is by Invincible Spirit from Ventura, by Spectrum. Her Galileo half-brother won the 14-furlong Round Table Handicap at Hollywood for Augustin with Drysdale after beginning in Europe, and he also was placed in the 12-furlong Grade 2 Sunset Handicap at the same track. Moonlight Cloud’s third dam, Doff the Derby, a daughter of Preakness winner Master Derby bred in the US by Nelson Bunker Hunt and later acquired by Vincent O’Brien, produced Epsom Derby winner Generous, and second dam Wedding Bouquet was a multiple Graded Stakes winner in the US and Europe .
See the video of the Maurice de Gheest below. Moonlight Cloud is in the middle of the track under the white Strawbridge silks, and her run is particularly impressive because she ranges next to high-class sprinter Dream Ahead (white stripe, round action)—who had the soft ground he wants yesterday—and then moves away from him with the utmost of ease.
