Beacon student awarded $5,000 JF Memorial Scholarship

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of people like you, more than $37,000 was raised in donations in memory of my son John, who passed on March 19, 2011. These funds will be disbursed as grants over the next four years to college-bound students at The Beacon School in Manhattan where John was a senior.

My wife and I stipulated that one annual grant for $5,000 be awarded by Beacon to a graduating senior who best exemplified the humanistic qualities and intellectual curiosity of our son, and we charged John’s favorite teacher, Mr. Lev Moscow, a history instructor, with the task of selecting the student. He chose the intellectually gifted Oldysh Hernandez—also a talented dancer—and she was formally awarded the scholarship at Beacon’s year-end awards ceremony in June. She’ll be entering a private university in the fall. ¬†Additionally, the Beacon baseball team—John was the starter at second base—was given $1,500, and the senior school trip was awarded $2,000.
