The Group 1 Invitation Cup at Mahalaxmi today over 2400 meters was billed as the rematch of Jacqueline and Becket, the first two in the Indian Derby over the same trip and track, and the race lived up to the hype with Becket pulling the upset this time on India’s darling, who’d won each of the classics this season — unprecedented in history. The video of the race is below. Becket’s trainer, Padmanabhan, changed tactics, jockeys, and equipment, to spoil Jacqueline’s fairy tale season. He was beaten in the Indian Derby in track-record time by the filly by making the first move, so today he followed the filly. The colt also was equipped with a new red Figure-8 noseband and he had the top Indian jock Suraj Narredu aboard instead of European Martin Dwyer. At the finish, the colt had a head on the filly in another thrilling finish for the two. For her part, Jacqueline was kept closer to the pace by jockey Richard Hughes, and she made the first move in mid-stretch that made her look the winner until the last stride.
