The Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, 77, who rocketed to international stardom in the 1965 film “Dr. Zhivago,” was present at Maisons-Laffitte Tuesday, Nov. 3, to see his 2-year-old filly Lixirova win the 1400-meter Group 3 Prix Miesque, the German publication Turf-Times reported today. Mr. Sharif, the publication said, had boarded a plane at 4:00am in Cairo to be in Paris for the race; Lixirova, Turf-Times said, was the actor’s first Group winner in France since Blinis won the Group 3 Prix du Muget in 1972.
The actor, who spent years living in Europe, has had a passion for racing that has spanned decades and has owned and bred horses throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Lixirova may bring him back to the spotlight at the racetrack.
A €50,000 yearling trained by David Smaga, Lixirova is expected to be a Guineas filly next season.
