The yearling portion of the three-day Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling and Broodmare Sale that ended Sept. 6 in New Mexico saw severe declines across the board. The 2009 figures: 356 yearlings sold for a gross of $11,238,900, for an average price of $31,569. Last year, 455 yearlings made $19,574,500, for an average price of $43,022. Gross proceeds were down 42.6 percent from a year ago and average price declined by 26.6 percent. In 2008, the high price at the sale was a $675,000 colt — a record for the sale. This year, the sale topper made $300,000.
