Halicarnassus, a 5-year-old son of Cape Cross, won the Group 2 Bosphorus Cup at Veliefendi in Istanbul today to give European raiders a clean sweep of the four international races on the two-day Istanbul International Racing Festival card. A Group 2 winner at 2, Halicarnassus has been heavily campaigned this year, with 16 (sixteen!) 2009 starts on his ledger before the race in Turkey. Last out, the horse was 2nd to Godolphin’s 3-year-old St. Leger hope Kite Wood in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury over 1 mile 5 1/2 furlongs in a field that also included Godolphin’s Qatar winner Age of Reason in 3rd and Ramzan Kadyrov’s subsequent Listed winner Mourilyan in 4th. Cutting back to 2400 meters, Halicarnassus won the newly minted Group 2 Bosphorus by a half-length from Turkish-bred and -owned Pan River in the time of 2:31.59 and earned $400,000 for his effort.
