US trainer Wesley Ward’s decision to take a string to Royal Ascot has paid dividends with two 2-year-old stakes winners. Today, his 2-year-old Trippi filly Jealous Again won the 5-furlong Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes by five lengths. Yesterday, his 2-year-old gelding Strike the Tiger won the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes, also over five furlongs.
From a breeding standpoint, South African breeders are the beneficiaries of these wins. Both Trippi, the sire of Jealous Again, and Tiger Ridge, the sire of Strike the Tiger, are ex-Florida stallions now at stud in South Africa.
Trippi, who stood at Ocala Stud in Florida where he was a leading sire, was sold a year ago to Johann and Gaynor Rupert’s L’Omarins Stud. He stood the 2008 season in South Africa for R 100,000.
Tiger Ridge, a Storm Cat half-brother to A.P. Indy, was sold in 2006 to Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift Stud, where he stood for R 80,000 in 2008.
