Joe Torre, who I’ll refer to only as the former Yankees skipper, is one of many baseball people with interests in horseracing. He was a 20 percent owner of Grade 1 winner Vineyard Haven last year, before Sheikh Mohammed purchased him and sent him to Dubai to prepare for the US classics. How much did Sheikh Mohammed pay for him? Turns out the sheikh offered $8 million, then $10 million, with no success. Then, according to MLB.com: ” ‘We weren’t thinking of the money, we were thinking of the excitement of the Derby,’ ” said Torre. ” ‘Then they offered $12 million and you start thinking how much money that is. Bobby [Frankel] sold him. The next day, he had seller’s remorse.’ ”
