Undefeated Greek-bred and raced Ialysos, a son of five-furlong Group 1 winner So Factual (by Known Fact) and the Polish Precedent mare Vallota, is entered in the Listed five-furlong J.W. Lees Achilles Stakes at Haydock Park Saturday. A 5-year-old who’s won all seven of his starts at Markopoulo race track in Greece over a synthetic surface, Ialysos tries turf and international stakes competition for the first time today. He’s now trained by Luca Cumani, who also trains international Group 1 winner Presvis for the colt’s owner and breeder, Greek Leonidas Marinopoulos. The owner is well known in France and has raced several big-name runners, including homebred Group 1 winner Keltos. Ialysos was bred in Greece at the owner’s Figaia Stud.
Horse racing in Greece is not up to international standards, but Ialysos was reportedly the best at home and couldn’t find any competition at Markopoulo. He’s been nominated to the three premier English Group 1 sprints — the King’s Stand, Golden Jubilee, and July Cup — so he is well thought of. Could he be another one like the Hungarian sprinter Overdose to emerge from a backwater European track to full-blown prominence?
