Sons of the late Sunday Silence have taken over where their sire left off in Japan. The latest to strike is 9-year-old Neo Universe, the sire of Sunday’s Satsuki Sho (Japan Group 1 2000 Guineas equivalent) winner Unrivaled. Click here to see a video and chart of the 2000-meter race from Nakayama in Japanese (click “High”). Neo Universe won the same race in 2003, as well as the Japanese Derby. His son is a winner of 4 of 5 starts now, and he covered the distance of the Satsuki Sho in 1:58.7 over firm turf. Unrivaled is a half-brother to 1996 Japanese Derby winner Fusaichi Concorde.
Unrivaled won the classic from Triumph March, a son of the Sunday Silence stallion Special Week. The latter was second in the 1998 Satsuki Sho but also won the Japanese Derby. He is the sire of the 2009 Oka Sho (Japan Group 1 equivalent to the 1000 Guineas) winner Buena Vista, who won the classic last Sunday. She also was the Japanese 2-year-old filly champion of 2008.
