BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Pryka (Southern Halo — Gold Rule, by Forty Niner), who will almost certainly be honored with the Carlos Pellegrini award as champion sprinter in a few weeks, has been sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Darley, it was confirmed today although rumors had been flying for some time. Bred by Haras Don Arcangel and raced by Damasia Lottero’s Haras Vacacion, Pryka won the Group 1 Felix de Alzaga Unzue and the Group 1 Gran Premio Maipu and was without doubt the best sprinter in Argentina these days.
The word is that Pryka will be sent to England to continue her career and Darley has aspirations for her to compete against the best European sprinters in such races as the Group 1 July Cup and the Group 1 Prix Maurice du Gheest and if she’s successful in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2010 at Meydan.
Two other horses bred and owned by Vacacion also have been sold to Arab interests. Group 2 winner Rugell also will go to England, while Uruguayan 2000 Guineas winner Rossel heads to Saudi Arabia. The sales of Pryka, Rugell, and Rossel confirm once again that despite an economic crisis worldwide there is plenty of interest for racing stock from the Arabic countries.
