DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Special for Sid Fernando): The best of the night, Well Armed, was unbeatable against the 13 horses that went after him in the 14th edition of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, the last edition of the Dubai World Cup held inside Nad Al Sheba before the opening of Meydan in 2010.
The son of Tiznow won by 14 lenghts from the Brazilian Gloria de Campeao. It was, without doubt, the best race of his campaign. Ridden by Aaron Gryder, he assumed leadership from the break and was never within reach of his rivals. In the straight, he was a machine that killed the competition, and he finished up in 2:01 1/100.
The night in Dubai also belonged to the local jockey Ahmed Ajtebi, who took first in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free with Gladiatorus and then the Group 1 Sheema Classic with Eastern Anthem. Both are trained by Mubarak Al Shafya and defend the colors of sons of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin had the 1-2 in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile and in the Group 2 UAE Derby. In the former, Two Step Salsa overcame stablemate Gayego and in the latter race it was Regal Ransom that liquidated the favorite Desert Party.
Another great race of the night, the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, saw Big City Man, trained in Saudi Arabia and with the Venezuelan Jose Verenzuela in the irons, win from Indian Blessing.
Most of the meeting developed under a persistent rain, and as someone added hereabouts: ” The sky was weeping for Nad Al Sheba .”
