Arlington’s signature international card today reinforced the dominance of European form with three European classic winners accounting for the three Grade 1 races on offer, each on turf—Arlington Million (2010 Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco), Beverly D (2009 French Oaks winner Stacelita), and Secretariat Stakes (2011 Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach)—but even the fourth stakes on the day, the lowly Hatoof Stakes on turf with a $65,000 value, fell to an ex-Euro El Prado filly named Santina Dond. The latter, trained by Gennadi Dorochenko and owned by Vladimir Kazakov, began her career in 2010 in Poland—a country whose stakes races aren’t given the sales catalog black type that’s handed to the winners and placed runners of Illinois-bred stakes races. Yet this filly, two-for-two at two last year in Warsaw and the winner of Poland’s prestigious Nagroda Dakoty, improbably won the black type Hatoof Stakes at 31-1.
Bred by Brereton C. Jones, the gray Santina Dond was purchased for $35,000 by Kazakov at the 2009 Keeneland September sale from the Airdrie Stud consignment. As he’s done lately, Kazakov sent the filly to Sluzewiec race track in Poland, where she won the Nagroda Dakoty on the same day as the track’s St. Leger, on Sept. 5, 2010 (see the Nagroda Dakoty video below; the runner-up came back at three to win the Polish 1000 Guineas).
Though Santina Dond won the 1300-meter Dakoty (on turf)—the top juvenile event in Warsaw and one that’s open to colts—Electra Deelites, a British-bred daughter of With Approval, won the equivalent filly race—Nagroda Efforty—and was actually named the champion two-year-old filly in Poland.
Equineline.com has updated Santina Dond’s pedigree here to note she’s now a black type winner (six wins from 10 starts all told), but note that Electra Deelites’ pedigree here is incomplete and lists her as Group 3 placed, which is not the case. Just to be sure, I ran an Equineline.com race record for Electra Deelites with black type rules, and no black type was listed for her record. She is however accomplished, as the winner runner-up of the 2400-meter Nagroda Liry (Polish Oaks) and the 2400-meter Polish Derby.

I have the Nagroda Liry (Polish Oaks) down as to be run Wednesday the 17 August..
The Liry Oaks run on the 30th of July was won by the grey filly HORTENSJA.. by, In Camera out of Halszka by Goldneyv..
second was Electra Deelites.. third was Khilona..
The Nagroda Liry was run July 30 and is the Oaks that you referenced. Electra Deelites was listed as finishing second, as you noted, but I don’t know if she was since elevated to first. I used information provided by Hyperion Promotions, which tracks progeny of With Approval; they said Electra Deelites was the winner. I have since sent an email for clarification if she was elevated.
As far as the Nagroda Liry running on Aug 17, not the case.
John Quinlan from Hyperion just confirmed that Electra Deelites was indeed second on the Nagroda Liry and said the misinformation credited to Hyperion came from Lanwades Stud, where With Approval stood.
Sid,
At least the JC and Equineline seem to have as much trouble as the rest of us in keeping track of the black type earned in “furrin” countries. England, France, Ireland, and a couple others don’t count as “furrin.”
With your coverage, as well as the good work in South America by Turf Diario and others, we are working toward full coverage of racing worldwide.
But at some point, rather soon I believe, we are going to have to jettison the imperialist designations of black type and credit some quite nice horses with good work, no matter where they are raced.
Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
You make a great point about black type. It is imperialist.
