Last year’s Russian Derby winner, the US-bred Monomakh, won the prestigious Russian Group 1 President of the Russian Federation Stakes Saturday (July 18) at the Central Moscow Hippodrome by a head from US-bred Sunshine Lemon. Monomakh covered the 2400 meters on dirt in 2:40. The race was worth 7,000,000 RUR, or $220,463.
Bred in Kentucky by G.W. Humphrey Jr. and W.S. Farish, Monomakh is By the A.P. Indy stallion Mineshaft out of the $310,233 Danzig stakes winner Everhope. He sold for $12,000 at Keeneland September in 2006 and is owned by the powerful Donskoi Stud — one of the leading outfits over there.
The win propelled Mineshaft to the top of the Russian general sire list.
